Caring for Tinted Contacts: Hygiene, Replacement Schedules & Eye Health

Tinted contact lenses provide beauty and functionality, but improper care can lead to discomfort or serious eye infections. Follow these best practices to enjoy your coloured lenses safely.

Hygiene Is Non‑Negotiable

Good hygiene prevents contamination and protects your eyes. Wash and dry your hands thoroughly before touching lenses, and avoid moisturisers or oils that can leave residue. Use only sterile, multipurpose solution to clean and store your lenses; never rinse them with tap water or saliva.

Cleaning & Storage

  • Rub gently – Place the lens in your palm and rub it with solution to remove debris and proteins.
  • Rinse thoroughly – After rubbing, rinse the lens with fresh solution to wash away loosened deposits.
  • Fresh solution every time – Always fill your case with new solution; topping up old solution promotes bacterial growth.
  • Replace your case – Lens cases can harbour microbes. Replace it every three months or sooner if it becomes scratched.

Replacement Schedules

Follow the replacement schedule specified for your lenses. Daily disposables offer the lowest risk of infection because you start with a fresh lens each day. Monthly or two‑week lenses are cost‑effective but require meticulous cleaning and storage. Never wear lenses longer than recommended, and discard them if they become damaged or uncomfortable.

When to Seek Help

If you experience redness, pain, blurred vision or persistent dryness, remove the lenses and consult an eye‑care professional immediately. Infection or allergic reactions can cause lasting damage if not treated promptly. Remember that contacts are medical devices that should be prescribed and fitted by a qualified practitioner.
