Contact Lens Case Hygiene: Prevent Red Eyes & Infections

Wearing contact lenses is supposed to make your life easier — not cause redness, dryness, or discomfort. But here’s what we’ve learned after 16 years of experience helping thousands of lens wearers:

The problem isn’t always the lenses. It’s often how you store and care for them — especially your lens case and solution.

When should I use fresh contact lens solution?

You should use fresh solution every time you insert or store your lenses. Never reuse or top off old liquid — it loses disinfecting power. Most contact lens solutions expire 30 to 90 days after opening, even if the bottle isn’t empty.

If your lenses have been sitting unused for a few days, you should replace the solution before wearing them. Old solution loses its effectiveness over time.

When should I replace my contact lens case?

You should replace your contact lens case every time you open a new bottle of solution. Even if the case looks clean, micro-scratches can harbor bacteria and lead to eye infections.

How do I know if my lens case is dirty?

You should swipe your fingertip along the inside of the case. If it feels slippery or filmy, that’s biofilm — a thin layer of bacteria that’s invisible to the eye. If it feels slimy, it’s time to toss the case and start with a new one.

Can I rinse contact lens cases with tap water?

No, you should never rinse your case with tap water. Tap water may contain microorganisms like Acanthamoeba that are dangerous to your eyes. Always rinse your case with sterile solution, never water, and let it air dry naturally.

What solution should I use for sensitive eyes?

You should use preservative-free solutions if your eyes are prone to irritation. They’re gentler, but expire quickly — usually within 14 days of opening. Always check the label and discard them on time.

Why shouldn't I wear lenses longer than recommended?

You should always follow the manufacturer’s wear schedule — Eyeling lenses are designed for 30 days or 180 days of use. Overwearing lenses can reduce oxygen flow, cause buildup of deposits, and raise the risk of serious infections.
